The four Clans of cat; Thunder, River, Wind and Shadow, had lived at the lake shore for many years. Generations upon generations grew and passed, and for a while everything was well. However, a cat is a cat. Domestic strays do not last long in the feral wilderness and all good things came to an end.
At first, the Clan cats reproduced too much and their territories could not suit their growling bellies. Rivalry came. Each Clan leader wanted a bigger piece of territory, to extend the boundaries to fill their hungry cats. But the territory became too small and the prey, even in the summer and spring, weakened supply. Cats began to die out until there was nobody left. They faithfully stayed, not daring to move for a more plentiful bounty of resources, until their ancestors came for their still bodies.
The four Clans of cats became a forgotten memory, if not little gossip.
Years later, StarClan remained watching over the lake of their descendants. They decided it was time to restore their home to its former glory, but with no Clans to count on or to communicate with, they began to invade the dreams of other cats; rogues, loners and kittypets. StarClan sent them dreams, telling them of Clan life and the warrior codes, how even at an old age you would be looked after and respected. You would run through the open lands free as can be, hunting by your own rules. Many cats ignored these as simple dreams, but those who didn't came to the lake where StarClan waited for them. They became the re-built Clans; not ancestors of the four original Clans, but common cats who dreamed of a world they did not grow into.
Although seasons passed, many many times, each Clan to this day remembers this story. Generations grew, passed into StarClan where they were welcomed, and life went on. The new Clans, guided by their ancestors, became so much like the originals. They no longer cared that they had kittypet, loner or rogue blood. It was washed over by a passage that they were truly Clan kin, and loyal to their own Clan above each other.
Heritage can be a frightening push to influence our goals. So hunt, protect, fight or even kill to achieve them.
And after all this time, rivalry runs deep.
